Capacitive Oil Level Sensor for Truck and Industrial Tanks

Capacitive Oil Level Sensors

What are Capacitive Liquid Level Sensors? The capacitive oil level sensor is a liquid level sensor based on the radio frequency capacitance measurement principle. It can be installed in various occasions to accurately measure the oil level of gasoline, diesel, hydraulic oil and other weakly corrosive liquids. The length can be customized according to customer requirements. It can output 420mA, 05V standard signals, as well as RS232 and RS485 communication signals. It can be used with satellite positioning monitoring systems, car modification factories, etc.

Sino-Inst supplies the 8061 and 8062 series of capacitive oil level sensors. The 8061 is suitable for small tanks ranging from 100 to 1,500 mm, while the 8062 is suitable for large tanks ranging from 500 to 5,000 mm.

capacitance oil level sensor Working principle

Capacitive Oil Level Sensor is based on the capacitance principle and uses the capacitance change in the medium to determine the level of the liquid.

First, capacitance is a common parameter in electronic components, which represents the ability to store charge between two conductors. The size of the capacitance depends on the distance between the two conductors and the nature of the medium. When the distance between two conductors is smaller, the capacitance is larger. Capacitance decreases as distance increases or the relative permittivity of the medium decreases.

Capacitive Oil Level Sensor uses liquid as a medium to change the capacitance value between two conductors. Normally, the dielectric constant of a liquid is much greater than that of air, so the liquid will cause a large capacitance change between the two conductors.

Capacitive Oil Level Sensor usually consists of two electrodes, one electrode is located at the bottom of the container and serves as the reference electrode. The other electrode changes depending on the level of the liquid. When the liquid level rises, the liquid will come into contact with the changing electrode, forming a liquid-electrode-reference electrode capacitance structure, and the capacitance value increases. On the contrary, when the liquid level decreases, the capacitance value between the liquid and the changing electrode decreases.

Technical advantages

This series of Capacitive Oil Level Sensors are metrology-grade measuring instruments with high resolution and measurement accuracy.

Capacitive Oil Level Sensor requires no manual intervention, is automatically calibrated, has no temperature drift, and is not affected by changes in the medium.

The same transmitter can correctly output accurate liquid level and height signals regardless of whether the medium being measured is water, gasoline or diesel, regardless of temperature changes. It completely solves the problem of difficult measurement of ethanol gasoline, methanol fuel and other media. It also solves the problem of measurement errors caused by different oil labels and huge differences in temperature in different regions.

FAQ

To enable remote monitoring of tank liquid levels, the system typically requires the following components:

1. Liquid level transmitters. These are used for real-time measurement of the liquid level in the tank. Whether capacitive, radar, or magnetostrictive level transmitters, they all support signal output, such as 4–20 mA, 0–5 V, 0–10 V, RS485, and RS232 signals.

2. Data acquisition devices, such as data loggers, RTUs, or PLCs. For data collection and transmission, if there are multiple tanks in close proximity within a tank farm, the most cost-effective solution is to use a single RTU or PLC connected via an RS485 bus to all level transmitters, then transmit the data to the cloud via a 4G gateway. If the tanks are scattered across different locations (such as multiple gas stations), each site should be equipped with a separate “data logger + DTU” set. In remote locations without power supply, consider integrated NB-IoT/LoRa wireless level transmitters, but reduce the reporting frequency.

3. Signal Transmission. In most scenarios, use 4G/5G cellular networks. Sites with fixed broadband can opt for wired connections. Use the MQTT protocol. For tanks in remote areas without power, switch to battery-powered NB-IoT or LoRa integrated level sensors. These instruments come with built-in wireless modules that connect directly to the cloud, eliminating the need for an entire data acquisition layer.

4. Monitoring Platform. By aggregating signals from all tanks onto the platform, you can view, store, and analyze tank level data, as well as configure alarms.

Our capacitive oil level sensors offer Class 0.5 measurement accuracy, which already meets the needs of the vast majority of users.
If you require higher accuracy, you can opt for an 80G radar level transmitter or a magnetostrictive level transmitter.

Capacitive liquid level sensors have the following main disadvantages:

  1. Sensitivity is affected by environmental factors

The sensitivity of capacitive liquid level sensors is susceptible to environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. Performance may degrade under extreme conditions, necessitating compensation measures that increase system complexity.

  1. High installation and maintenance costs

Compared to simpler liquid level sensors, capacitive sensors entail higher installation and maintenance costs. Due to their precise operating principles, they require professional installation and regular maintenance, thereby increasing the overall cost of use.

  1. Strict requirements regarding the electrical properties of the medium

The ideal medium for a capacitive level sensor is a liquid with a high and stable dielectric constant, distinct conductivity characteristics (either clearly non-conductive or clearly conductive), and non-sticking properties. Measurement accuracy drops significantly with media that have low dielectric constants, variable compositions, intermediate conductivity levels, or a tendency to adhere to surfaces.

Sino-Inst’s capacitive level sensors provide accurate level measurements for water, ethanol, methanol, gasoline, diesel, hydraulic oil, and various other mildly corrosive liquids.

The price of industrial-grade capacitive oil/liquid level sensors typically ranges from $150 to over $800, depending on the measurement length, output signal, and explosion-proof rating.
