Gear Flow Meter is a type of volumetric flow transmitter. It is a transmitter for measuring volume flow with high precision.
With the flow of the medium, the gears mesh and rotate. Under the action of the fluid flow, a pressure difference is formed at both ends of the meter’s inlet and outlet. No power supply is required, and a pair of gears rotate freely. The cavity between the gears is filled with liquid, and the liquid is drawn by Discharge. Measuring the number of revolutions of the gear can know the flow of liquid and liquid flowing through the instrument.
The speed of the Gear Flow Meter is detected by the sensing coil in the signal amplifier installed on the case. The signal amplifier is not in contact with the measured medium.
When the transmitter gear cuts the magnetic field lines generated by the permanent magnet in the housing, it causes a change in the magnetic flux in the sensing coil.
The sensing coil sends the detected magnetic flux periodic change signal to the preamplifier. The signal is amplified and shaped to generate a pulse signal proportional to the flow velocity. It is sent to the unit conversion and flow integration circuit to obtain and display the cumulative flow value.
At the same time, the pulse signal is also sent to the frequency current conversion circuit, which converts the pulse signal into an analog current, and then indicates the instantaneous flow value.
Gear Flow Meter has high processing precision and precise installation. The rotation of the gear is scanned non-contact. Each tooth produces a pulse with very high resolution. Spur gear transmitters can measure very small flow rates and quantify small volumes of liquid.
Pressure Drop
The pressure drop of a gear flow meter is related to factors such as the viscosity and flow rate of the medium. You can refer to the graph below. Alternatively, you can contact us to confirm the accurate pressure drop.

Oval gear flow meters are flow instruments that measure volumetric flow with high precision. It works on the principle of positive displacement. The flow of medium turns the gears. The rotation of the gear is scanned by 2 non-contact pulse detectors. Each tooth generates a pulse. , which is finally generated from the frequency signal proportional to the flow rate, and then the flow value Q is obtained.
The oval gear flowmeter has high processing precision, precise installation and high resolution. The oval gear flowmeter requires the measured medium to be lubricating. Non-lubricating media such as water cannot be measured.
At the same time, the oval gear flowmeter is not suitable for fluids containing solid particles. If there is gas in the measured liquid medium, it will also cause measurement errors.
The measurement accuracy of the oval gear flowmeter is high. The basic error is generally ±0.5%R, and the special one can reach ±0.2%R or higher. It is especially suitable for use in the field where high precision measurement is required.
There is no influence on the measurement accuracy when measuring the distortion of the flow velocity field of the swirling flow and the flow resistance of the pipeline. There is no requirement for the leading straight pipe section.
The oval gear flowmeter can be used for the measurement of high viscosity fluid. Wide flow range, generally 10:1 to 5:1, special up to 30:1 or greater.
It can directly read the on-site flow. Cumulative totals can be measured without an external power supply. Clear display and easy operation.
Disadvantages of oval gear flow meters:
The structure of the oval gear flowmeter is complex, bulky and heavy. Especially larger diameter oval gear flowmeters are bulky.
Due to the thermal expansion and deformation of parts at high temperature, the material becomes brittle at low temperature and other problems. Oval gear flowmeters are generally not suitable for high and low temperature applications.
Most oval gear meters are only suitable for clean single-phase fluids. When there are particles and dirt, a filter needs to be installed upstream, which not only increases the pressure loss, but also increases the maintenance work. If the liquid containing gas is measured, a gas separator must be installed.
The oval gear flowmeter has poor safety, such as the detection of moving parts stuck. The fluid cannot pass through, and the shut-off piping system cannot be used.
Some oval gear flowmeter instruments will bring pulsation to the flow during the measurement process. Larger gauges also generate noise. Even the pipes vibrate.
Ultrasonic flowmeters use sound waves to determine the velocity of a fluid flowing in a pipe.
At no flow conditions, the frequencies of an ultrasonic wave transmitted into a pipe. And its reflections from the fluid are the same.
Under flowing conditions, the frequency of the reflected wave is different due to the Doppler effect. When the fluid moves faster, the frequency shift increases linearly. The transmitter processes signals from the transmitted wave and its reflections to determine the flow rate.
Transit time ultrasonic flowmeters send and receive ultrasonic waves between transducers in both the upstream and downstream directions in the pipe.
At no flow conditions, it takes the same time to travel upstream and downstream between the transducers.
Under flowing conditions, the upstream wave will travel slower and take more time than the (faster) downstream wave.
When the fluid moves faster, the difference between the upstream and downstream times increases. The transmitter processes upstream and downstream times to determine the flow rate. They represent about 12% of all flowmeters sold.
