Clamps on flow meters are essentially our clamp-on ultrasonic flow meters. In terms of working principle, there are time difference type and Doppler type. We use the more commonly used time difference type to analyze the working of clamps on flow meters.

In the time difference ultrasonic flow meter, an ultrasonic wave transmitting clamp-on sensor (commonly known as ultrasonic probe) and an ultrasonic wave receiving clamp-on sensor are placed within a fixed length L.

The propagation speed of ultrasonic waves in downstream and upstream is different. The relationship between the propagation time difference and the fluid velocity is used to calculate the flow velocity. If the pipe diameter is known, the flow rate is obtained by the flow velocity and pipe diameter.

The main disadvantages of the clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter are:

  1. The measurement temperature is limited. Currently, ultrasonic flowmeters can only measure fluids below 160°C.
  2. The anti-interference ability is not ideal, and it is easily affected by ultrasonic noise such as bubbles, scaling, and pumps, resulting in poor accuracy.
  3. The installation location requires avoiding the pump outlet, strong magnetic field, electric field, and high pipe points.
  4. The installation method also has a great impact on the measurement effect of the ultrasonic flowmeter. Incorrect installation methods will affect the measurement accuracy.
  5. The pipeline has high requirements and needs to be coated with a layer of coupling agent, otherwise measurement errors will occur.
  6. Compared with the measurement of other contact flowmeters, the accuracy of the clamp-on ultrasonic flowmeter will be lower.

For the measurement of water pipe flow, we can choose many types of flow meters. Contact type, such as electromagnetic flow meter, turbine flow meter, oval gear flow meter. Non-contact type, which is our clamp-on flow meter.

Using a clamp-on flow meter to measure a water pipe, there is no need to cut off the water pipe. You only need to clamp the ultrasonic sensor outside the water pipe to measure the water flow.
