What is a Pitot Tube Flow Meter? A Pitot Tube Flow Meter is a dynamic pressure flow sensor that uses the Pitot tube principle to obtain the fluid velocity at the center of the pipe (total pressure – static pressure = dynamic pressure) and then converts it into fluid volumetric flow rate or mass flow rate.

A Pitot Tube Flow Transmitter is an advanced instrument designed and manufactured using the Pitot tube principle, based on the international standard ISO 3966 “Measurement of flow rate of fluids in closed pipes – Velocity-area method using Pitot tube static pressure tubes,” and relying on advanced wind tunnel testing technology. It is widely applicable to the measurement and online comparison of flow rates for liquids, steam, and gases.

How Does a Pitot Tube Flow Meter Work?

The pitot tube sensor has a small total pressure port at its tip, facing into the flow, where a stagnation point forms. At a set distance from the tip, several static pressure ports are oriented perpendicular to the flow direction. These static pressures are averaged in an internal equalization chamber before output.

The difference between total pressure and static pressure has a defined numerical relationship with flow velocity. By measuring this differential pressure with a DP transmitter, the flow velocity is determined and the volumetric or mass flow rate is then calculated.
