Portable Turbine Flow Meter for Fuel Tanker Unloading

Portable Turbine Flow Meter for Fuel Tanker Unloading

This specialized portable turbine flow meter measures the volume and temperature of fuel delivered by gravity from a tank truck to a gas station storage tank. It connects into the unloading line through quick couplings, records every delivery, and settles the question that comes up at every drop: did the station receive the quantity on the bill of lading?

Accuracy is ±0.1% with repeatability of ±0.02%. The meter weighs 6 kg, runs on its own Ex battery, and carries ATEX and China National Ex certification for hazardous-area operation. One unit handles gasoline, diesel, kerosene and ethanol gasoline, and measurement records transfer to an Android phone over Bluetooth.

Why Verify Tanker Unloading Volume with a Flow Meter?

Most stations check deliveries by dipping the underground tank before and after unloading, then reading the tank capacity table. That method inherits every error in the table itself — and horizontal tank tables drift after installation, settlement, or tank deformation. A dip reading also can’t separate a short delivery from a wrong table.

A portable turbine flow meter placed in the unloading line measures the actual delivered volume directly, independent of the tank table. This gives a station operator three things:

  1. Delivery verification. Measure the volume and temperature of each tanker unloading, quickly and accurately, and compare against the dispatch note.
  2. Tank table verification. Check the accuracy of the horizontal tank volume table against a metered reference volume.
  3. Tank table correction. Use metered unloading volumes as the reference method to correct the tank capacity table.

Because the meter reads in V20 — volume corrected to 20°C — the comparison with refinery dispatch figures is on the same basis, and temperature-related volume change during transport no longer muddies the reconciliation.

How It Works

The meter installs between the tanker outlet and the station’s fill point using quick couplings — no tools, no modification to the unloading line, and no effect on unloading speed. It is designed for gravity self-flow unloading at gas stations. Fuel drives the turbine rotor; rotor speed is proportional to flow velocity, and the electronics totalize the volume on the 7-digit display.

Two measurements run at once. The turbine section totals the gross volume, while a built-in temperature sensor logs oil temperature to ±0.1°C. The meter then calculates the temperature-compensated volume (V20) automatically, so the operator gets both the as-delivered volume and the standard-condition volume without manual conversion tables.

A sight glass lets the operator confirm the line has drained, and a vacuum fill valve ensures no residual oil is left in the meter after unloading.

The whole measurement is automated from connection to record. There is no manual reading at a critical moment, no figure copied by hand — each delivery is stored on the meter as a tamper-proof record.

How Portable Turbine Flow Meter Works

Packing list

Each meter ships as a complete kit in a transport case:

Featured Applications

Gas stations — verifying each tanker delivery against the dispatch note, especially where short-delivery disputes have come up.

Fuel depots and distributors — metering gravity transfers where a fixed meter isn’t installed.

Station commissioning and audit — verifying and correcting horizontal tank capacity tables with a metered reference volume.

FAQ

This one is a turbine type: fuel flowing through the meter spins a rotor, and rotor speed is directly proportional to flow velocity. The electronics convert rotation pulses into totalized volume. Turbine measurement suits clean, low-viscosity fuels (≤13 mm²/s) such as gasoline, diesel and kerosene, which is exactly the service this meter is designed for.

Temperature doesn’t change the metered volume, but it changes what that volume means — fuel expands and contracts with temperature, so 30,000 liters loaded warm at the depot is not 30,000 liters delivered cold. This meter measures oil temperature to ±0.1°C and automatically outputs V20, the volume corrected to 20°C, so delivered quantity can be compared with dispatch documents on the same basis.

No. The meter connects into the gravity unloading line with quick couplings and passes 8–80 m³/h (34–340 GPM) through a DN80 bore — full unloading flow. An adapter set fits it to 2.5″ outlets. After unloading, the vacuum fill valve and sight glass confirm no residual oil is held in the meter.

Yes. The meter is intrinsically safe (ATEX and China National Ex certified) and runs on its own Ex battery, with no external power needed in the hazardous area.

Each meter is factory-calibrated and ships with a calibration certificate. Production runs under an ISO 9001:2015 quality system. Meter coefficients can be reviewed and adjusted through the Bluetooth app by authorized users.

The meter stores 1,000 measurement records. Records can be queried on the meter or read out to an Android phone over Bluetooth, so individual deliveries can be reviewed after the fact.

A portable ultrasonic meter clamps on the outside of a pipe and is convenient for surveys, but delivery verification needs higher accuracy and repeatability than clamp-on measurement can give. This turbine meter is in-line, reads to ±0.1% with ±0.02% repeatability, and adds automatic temperature compensation — the figures a delivery dispute actually turns on.
