Vortex Shedding Flow Meter Measurement Principle

A vortex flow meter consists of a vortex generator, a frequency detector, and a signal converter, outputting a 4-20mA DC signal or a pulse voltage signal. Its working principle involves placing a vortex generator in the fluid, alternately generating regular vortices from both sides of the generator; this type of vortex is called a Karman vortex street.

There is a stable mathematical relationship between the vortex shedding frequency and the fluid flow velocity:

f = St × V / d

Where:
f — vortex shedding frequency
St — Strouhal number
V — average fluid velocity
d — characteristic width of the vortex-generating body

Since the vortex frequency is proportional to the fluid flow velocity, the volumetric flow rate of the fluid can be calculated by detecting the vortex frequency.
