What is a Target Flow Meter?

A target flow meter is an instrument that measures flow rate by utilizing the pressure difference caused by the fluid passing through a target. Target flow meters are also known as drag force flow meters.

When the medium flows through the measuring pipe, a pressure difference is generated due to its kinetic energy acting on the flow obstruction (target plate), resulting in a force on the obstruction. The magnitude of this force is directly proportional to the square of the fluid velocity. This is somewhat similar to differential pressure flow measurement.

  • The whole instrument has a solid structure without moving parts. Easy to disassemble;
  • Can choose a variety of anti-corrosion and high and low temperature resistant materials. Such as Hastelloy, titanium, etc;

When the medium flows in the measuring tube, the pressure difference caused by its own kinetic energy passing through the blocking member (target). And has a force on the blocking member. The magnitude of the force is proportional to the square of the velocity of the medium.

Target Flow Meter Construction:

The mathematical way is as follows:

A ——Axial projection area of ​​the choke on the measuring tube (mm2)
ρ ——Density of medium under working conditions (kg / m3)

The force F received by the choke member (target) is transmitted to the capacitive force sensor via a rigidly connected transmission member (stem).

And the capacitive force sensor generates a voltage signal output:
V = KF
In the formula:
V——Voltage output by the capacitive force sensor (mV), K——Proportional constant, F——The acting force of the choke (target)
So, after the voltage signal is pre-amplified, AD converted. And processed by the computer. The corresponding instantaneous flow and cumulative total can be obtained.

Target flowmeters are mainly used for flow measurement of high viscosity fluids. What are the advantages of target flowmeters:

  1. Since the target plate and target rod of the target flowmeter have their own weight, the zero point must be reset after installation;
  2. Not suitable for continuous working fluid measurement environment, frequent switching engineering will affect;
  3. The range is narrow, and the range of general instruments is 10:1;
  4. The accuracy is not very high, and it is generally used as a process control meter, and it should be used with caution in trade settlement;
  5. There is drift (usually with compensation);
  6. Easy to vibrate (generally add damping parts);
  7. The target chip is easy to fall off (operation reason);

The target type flowmeter is suitable for a variety of occasions and measurements of various media. In order to ensure satisfactory results, it is recommended to pay attention to the following when selecting a model:

1) Determine the required common flow, and determine the maximum flow by 1.5 to 2.5 times the common flow.
2) Specify the standard of the mounting flange and the form of seal, especially for special installation requirements.
3) When ordering, the user should indicate the medium of the fluid to be tested and give the density of the medium.

Application Case 1:

Coke Oven Gas Measurement in a Coking Plant (containing oil mist + dust)

Application: The force generated by the coke oven gas impacting a ceramic target plate is converted into a signal by a sensor, which is then converted into a gas flow rate.

We configured a wide flow channel and back-purging interface for the user to prevent oil and dust accumulation from affecting the force on the target plate.

Results: Data error ±0.4%, no blockage for 6 months, recovering 5000 m³/month more coke oven gas than ordinary flow meters.

Application Case 2:

PAC Dosing Measurement in a Wastewater Treatment Plant (containing particles + viscous substances)
